Pier Compaction Performance Indicator™ (PCPI)

The PCPI alerts the operator to “real-time” precise compaction activity in order to efficiently control the ramming process.

Operator Control.  The compaction machine operator receives “real time” progress of compaction with each ramming cycle.  He can observe the progress through an on-board screen, and easily see when the design stiffness values have been met.  Additionally, if the design is not met, then the contractor has the opportunity to investigate and if necessary fix the questionable areas, increasing the uniformity of the compacted materials.  This results in overall job site savings in time and cost, and eliminating potential rework.  It also improves the quality of the work, providing a uniformly constructed subgrade support across an entire structure.

Engineering Control.  The model pier parameters for compaction stiffness are developed and used for construction.  As variation in matrix soil materials are encountered, due to changes in groundwater and other unforeseen subsurface conditions, the compaction operator will continue ramming until the engineering model pier parameters are met.  This provides for site and soil profile specific construction for greater subgrade stiffness uniformity.  If it is not possible to attain the model pier parameters, the operator will be able to immediately notify the on-site QA/QC personnel.
